Found on Death's Doorstep

Sahasi was discovered in Vaishali Nagar, Bhilai, in a condition that haunts us to this day - unable to stand, nearly lifeless, and suffering from severe malnutrition. As a nursing mother, she had given everything to her puppies while receiving nothing in return, a tragic example of how street dogs sacrifice their own health for their offspring.

A Mother's Ultimate Sacrifice

We rushed her to the vet immediately where she was administered IV fluids, plasma, and essential supplements to stabilize her critical condition. The diagnosis was heartbreaking: severe malnutrition, commonly known as "milk fever," caused by complete lack of prenatal and postnatal care. Sahasi had literally been starving while trying to feed her babies.

Tragically, despite her sacrifice, all four of her puppies, who had been cared for in her area, perished from a mysterious illness. Sahasi had nearly died trying to save babies who couldn't be saved, a devastating reminder of the harsh realities street animals face daily.

The Long Battle Back

Initially, we continued her treatment on the spot. As weather conditions worsened, we collaborated with a local shelter and shifted Sahasi two weeks later. There were multiple complications from her weakened state: paralysis led to painful bed sores, while mastitis caused her nipples to fill with pus—a month of intensive wound care was needed just to address these secondary infections. Every day was a fight for survival.

Small Steps, Big Victories

The breakthrough came when Sahasi began crawling out of her cage. We immediately started physiotherapy, and within another month, she was walking again; though still dangerously thin with her bones clearly visible. Her determination to recover was truly inspiring.

Foster Care and Recovery

Two different fosters continued Sahasi's rehabilitation over the following months. Their dedicated care helped her slowly regain weight and strength, transforming her from a skeleton into a healthy dog again.

Preventing Future Suffering

After 4-5 months of treatment, we made the crucial decision to spay Sahasi, ensuring she would never again face the life-threatening malnourishment that comes with repeated pregnancies on the streets, accompanied with the heartbreak of losing more puppies.

The Challenge of Return

When it came time for release, local residents initially resisted having Sahasi back in their area. It took months of patient negotiation and community counseling before we could finally return her to her territory, where she continues to thrive today.

A Funny Footnote

Despite saving her life, Sahasi now hilariously avoids our rescue team like the plague' perhaps associating us with all those medical procedures! Her wariness is actually a sign of her complete recovery and return to normal dog behavior.

The Cycle of Street Animal Suffering

Sahasi's story - losing her puppies despite nearly dying to feed them - highlights the tragic reality facing countless street dog mothers. Without proper veterinary care and nutrition, both mothers and babies often don't survive.

Support spay-neuter programs in your community. Preventing unwanted pregnancies saves mothers like Sahasi from this devastating cycle of sacrifice, loss, and suffering.

Please be mindful of your street animals and feed appropriate nutrtional food to avoid malnourishment like that of Sahasi.

Sahasi's recovery required months of medical care and foster support. Help us prevent more maternal tragedies through our sterilization programs.
