Meet Monty: The Alpha Who Never Gave Up
First assessment of Monty on the day of accident.
Monty after 3 months of treatment and care!
A Street Dog's Story
Meet Monty, a five-year-old street dog from Vaishali Nagar, Bhilai, who has been a beloved part of our volunteer Praanjali's neighborhood. As the alpha dog of his locality, Monty protects the other dogs while regularly visiting us for food and affection—his tail wagging with joy even when he spots us from afar.
The Incident
In 2021, we received devastating news: Monty had been severely injured. When Praanjali rushed to help him, we discovered his spine and hind legs were so badly damaged that he cried in agony when trying to stand. Despite his pain, Monty never growled or tried to bite us - it was as if he knew we were there to help.
Through his many injection doses and oral medications, he cooperated with us, with only love in his eyes as he looked at us.
We later learned this wasn't an accident. Three young men had deliberately run their motorcycle over Monty simply because they didn't like him caring for the other street dogs. The cruelty was heartbreaking, but we refused to give up on him.
Unfortunately, none of the witnesses took down any identifying details of the people involved, making it impossible to pursue a legal case.
The Long Road to Recovery
Under veterinary supervision, we began intensive treatment with injections and medications. Monty endured it all with remarkable patience, looking at us with questioning eyes but never resisting our care. When his baby brother Cheeku was also hit by a vehicle, Monty, despite his own injuries, continued protecting and caring for him.
After three weeks with little improvement, we grew concerned about Monty's ability to walk again. We realised he had an hairline fracture in his spine. Working closely with our vet, we adjusted his medication until we found the right combination. We also started his physiotherapy so he could gain the strength to walk. Slowly but surely, Monty began to heal.
Victory and Hope
After 2.5 months of dedicated treatment, Monty was walking again! Today, he continues his role as the neighborhood's protective alpha, caring for his mother and two younger brothers. Monty's mother is now spayed, and is enjoying the street life with her sons.
Monty's recovery proves that with compassion, persistence, and proper care, even the most challenging situations can have happy endings. He won his fight against those who tried to disable him for life.
